また夏がやってきました。長男が幼稚園の年長さんの時から始まって、私たち親子の夏ごとの「サマーキャンプ通い」はもう8年目になります。まったく、毎年毎年よくやっているものだと、自分でも感心します。でも、もうここまで来たらやめるわけにはいかない。というわけで、今年も母と二人の子どもで、サンディエゴにやってきました。今日現在のサマースクール/キャンプ報告です。本の題名なども含めて、参考にしてください。

★ (1) La Jolla YMCA の Leadership Camp と L.I.T.の活動 ★
12才になった長男は、La Jolla YMCAの"Leadership Camp" で、最初の一週間を過ごしました。これは、12才から17才の Middle / High School の子どもたちを対象としていて、キャンプのリーダーになるためのノウハウを学ぶキャンプです。初日にはしっかりとした「リーダー・マニュアル」をもらって帰ってきました。このマニュアルに書かれている内容を元に、「良いリーダーとはなにか?」、「ゲームの進め方」、「CPR (応急処置)」などのメニューを、一週間かけてこなして行きます。このキャンプをとった人は、次の週から実際のキャンプに「副班長」(Leader In Training = 通称 L.I.T. と呼ばれます) のような立場で入ることができます。つまり「副班長養成キャンプ」。講義もありますが、もちろん遊びもたっぷりあって、毎日楽しんで通いました。通常のディ・キャンプにはあまりいない13才以上の「先輩たち」と一緒に "hang out" できるのが、彼にとってはとても楽しかったようです。スラングのボキャブラリーも増えたようですし.. (? ?;)
一週間の"Leadership Camp"での「トレーニング」を終えた彼は、2週目、"Pee Wee Camp" という一番年少の4,5 歳児を対象としたキャンプにL.I.T.として入りました。幼稚園の時に、初めてアメリカに来て、いきなり彼が放り込まれたのが (私が放り込んだんですが)、まさにこの"Pee Wee Camp"だったので、そのL.I.T.として小さい子どもたちの面倒を見てあげる立場になった息子を見て、私はちょっと感無量。本人からの報告によれば「月曜日は5人くらいずっと泣きやまない子がいた。やっぱり初日はお母さんに会いたいらしいね」とのこと。二日目も泣きやまなかった3人のちびっこは ﾒThe Three Muska-tearsﾓ と名付けられたそうです。自分だって、初日はずっと泣いていたのにねー。
で、このL.I.T.というのは何をするのかというと、まあ要するに、ずっとちびっ子たちと遊んでいるのです。靴のひもを結んであげたり、着替えを手伝ったり、絵本を読んであげたりしながら、一日を過ごしているようです。
さて、これを書いている現在、3週目、息子は "Tennis Camp" にL.I.T.として参加しています。今週はL.I.T.の人数が多かったため、第一希望の Surf Camp には入れなかったので、第2希望のテニスキャンプになったそうです。こちらは、先週のPee Wee Campとは若干雰囲気が違い、参加者も小学生で、みんな「テニスをする」という目的で来ています。遠足やプールなどのお遊びもありますが、毎日のテニス練習での球出しや球拾い、用具の管理などがL.I.T.の仕事です。
彼にとっては今週で "Summer Camp" は終わりです。来週からは、5週間の全寮制「サマースクール」に入ります。これは、私たちにとって初めての体験です。どうなりますことやら。またご報告をお楽しみに。(以下はLa Jolla YMCAのサイトより抜粋)
LEADERSHIP CAMP - prerequisite for LIT Program.
Learn to be a leader! In this camp you will become CPR and First Aid Certified, learn leadership skills, participate in group building exercises, and become qualified as a Leader in Training. Also get wet and wild at a water park! Attendance for the entire duration of camp is mandatory in order to become an LIT.

LIT - LEADER-IN-TRAINING
A fun and challenging way to spend the summer. Personal as well as vocational development will be the primary focus for the LIT program. Participants will be able to experience the camp leader role by assisting with different day camps. All participants must attend Leadership Camp before signing up as a LIT. Also, LITs must fill out application located at the YMCA, and attend one refresher course offered monthly.
Program Hours: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

★ (2) La Jolla Country Day School のサマースクール★
[Readers' Theater]
10才になった娘は、La Jolla Country Day School という、私立の学校のサマースクールに通っています。まず、最初の一週間は "Readers' Theater" という授業でした。リーダースシアターというのは、つまり「朗読劇」。セリフを覚えて演じるというのではなく、一人ひとりが役について、原文を朗読するという演劇です。このサマースクールでは、何冊かの本を読み、自分たちの上演作品を決め、原作を自分たちの「脚本」にまとめてタイプ打ちして、金曜日には親を招いての上演会を行うというものでした。上演作品はギリシャ神話より「Theseus and the Minotaur」。出演者は、クラス全員の6人でした。
日本には「いちょう座」(http://www.ichouza.com/top.html)というリーダーズシアターのすばらしい劇団がありますね。私たち親子はここのファンで、何回か公演を見に行ったことがあります。日本の小学校では総合学習の時間にリーダースシアターに取り組んでいるところもあるようです。いろいろな表現方法に挑戦してみるというのは、小学生だけに限らず、とても楽しいことですよね。

Reader's Theatre: Grades 4-6
This course will provide students with an opportunity enhance their speaking and writing skills while using their creative expression. They will read literature from Tall Tales to Tolstoy, transform stories into scripts, and perform them in class. Memorization will not be required; students just need to bring imagination and enthusiasm to class.

娘の報告によれば、クラスは10人以下のようです。筆記用具とノートを自分で持って行っていますが、クラスによっては文具類も先生がそろえてくれているところもあるようです。すべてのクラスから毎日(週末も)宿題がでます。

今のところ「詩」を中心に授業は進んでいるようです。色々な「詩」の種類について勉強し、メタファー(隠喩)やパーソニフィケーション(擬人法)といったテクニックについて学んでいます。プロの作品を読んだり、自分の作品を書いたりすることも、もちろん行います。先生はやさしい女の先生だそうです。(以下はLa Jolla Country Day Schoolのサイトより抜粋)

Creative Writing Workshop: Grades 5-8
Do you ever have a "mental block" when you are trying to write? The instructor will offer students a unique and "safe" approach to creative writing. Emphasis is placed on stimulating thought processes and developing expression and creativity. Students are given the opportunity to read and critique each otherﾕs work. Grammar, paragraph organization, and vocabulary enrichment are also incorporated into the course. Topics to be discussed include the essay, short story, novel, poetry, and the Japanese form called "haiku."

タイトルの通り、人前で話す技術を学びます。先生が下に出てくるﾓSummer Readingﾓと同じなので、最初のスピーチのテーマは、その時にリーディングのクラスで読んでいた ﾒHatchetﾓ に登場する動物の中から自分の好きなものを選びなさいということでした。それについてリサーチし、原稿をまとめ、クラスの前でプレゼンテーションを行いました。リサーチは、図書館で授業の時間を使って行ったということです。娘は "American Black Bear" について、調べて発表しました。

Public Speaking: Grades 5-8
This course is designed as an introduction to public speaking. Emphasis is placed on gaining experience as a speaker in front of an audience or as a member of a group. Students are instructed in both form (posture, delivery, and diction) and content (choice of topic, organization, and development). Topics covered include informative, persuasive and instructive speeches, formal readings, and group discussions.

このクラスでは、全員で同じ本を読みながら、その内容について3人ほどのグループに分かれて話し合います。本は各自に配布され、毎日数ページの読書の宿題が出ます。一週間に一冊のペースで読んでいるようです。

Summer Reading: Grades 5-8
The goals of this course are to improve reading comprehension, enhance the reading experience through discussion and critical thinking, and motivate participants to read more. Reading selections are based on both reading for pleasure and challenge, and at least one novel is from the La Jolla Country Day School summer reading list. Students complete three novels and several short stories, and class activities include discussion, reading rounds, book reviews and talks, oral reading, chapter quizzes, and essay tests.

Writing Workshop: Grades 5-8
Each class includes discussions of grammar and rules of writing. Students learn about commas and how and when to use them, how to punctuate and incorporate dialogue, and how to avoid writing run-on and fragment sentences. The majority of each class, however, is spent writing. Students have an opportunity to meet with the instructor or other students as they work to perfect their pieces. They learn how to edit other peopleﾕs work and how to edit their own, as well as organization techniques such as outlining and mapping.
